Natural Deodorant - What you need to know

Posted by Brittney Bellamy on

NATURAL really seems to be the new wave right now. We see the word everywhere and I'm sure we've started to incorporate more and more of these "natural" items into our lives. Why wouldn't we? What could be better?? Natural Foods - absolutely! Natural Skincare - sign me up!! Natural Deodorant - I, umm....wait, will it really work? lol

Short answer is Yes!! Natural Deodorants are definitely worth giving a try. They are an amazing way to naturally keep away unwanted odors, but there are a few things you need to know before you take the plunge. Not all natural deodorants are created equally. So, how do you know which is right for you? Where do you begin?

No worries, I'm here to help.

Deodorants VS Antiperspirant

Antiperspirants have come a long way in helping us avoid the embarrassment of odors caused by sweat, but that reassurance has come at a great expense - our long term health. Antiperspirants use aluminum (yes, the metal & neurotoxin) to block our pores, leaving us sweat-free, which sounds great but is quite the contrary. The truth is we're SUPPOSED to sweat!! Sweating is our body's way of naturally detoxing itself. Through sweating, we release toxic chemicals, excess salt & calcium (which create kidney stones), keep our body temperature regulated and even prevent acne breakouts. Antiperspirants completely block that process, preventing the body from fully functioning properly. Clogged pores means the body works overtime to produce more sweat. More sweat means you’ll need to buy more antiperspirants. You apply more, then you sweat even more - and the cycle continues, increasing the need for antiperspirant, which means you'll spend more & more on the same product over & over. (Awfully clever, right? Smh)

So, if the toxins aren't being released, where do they go?

I'm glad you asked. When these toxins and excess minerals can't be released, they become trapped, of course. With nowhere to go, they are reabsorbed by the body. The areas under our arms are super close to our lymph nodes and breast tissue, which makes sense as to why antiperspirants are so closely linked to breast cancer. Our skin absorbs 64% of everything we put on it, which means our tissues are not only reabsorbing toxins they want to release, but it's also taking in the properties of your antiperspirant:

  • Aluminum - a metal linked to the increased risk of Alzheimer's & dementia.
  • Triclosan - classified as a pesticide by the FDA, linked to antibiotic resistance and thyroid issues.
  • Parabens- synthetic chemicals linked to birth defects, hormonal imbalances, and organ toxicity.
  • Synthetic fragrances & colors - which can mask hundreds of unknown chemicals.

Our Natural Deodorant approaches the body's detoxing process in a completely different (and by far healthier) way. By using a well balanced combination of pure, natural ingredients, our deodorant provides a thin layer of skin protection while allowing the skin to breathe freely. Deodorant does NOT stop you from sweating, but instead promotes proper body function. As your body starts to regulate, you'll notice that you will not sweat nearly as much.

How Do Natural Deodorants Actually Work?

Formulating an all-natural deodorant that actually works took coming to understand how “sweating” works. What causes the odor. How can we attack the odor without disturbing nature’s design? I’m happy to say I’ve found an amazing solution!!

Instead of pore clogging chemicals, my handcrafted deodorants are made of:

  • Coconut Oil - contains antibacterial properties that help kill the bacteria that causes odor.
  • Shea Butter- soothes the skin, naturally reduces inflammation.
  • Arrowroot Powder - helps to absorb wetness caused by the process of perspiration.
  • Zinc Oxide Powder (non-nano, uncoated) - CANNOT be absorbed into the skin. Instead provides a breathable, chemical-free layer of skin protection, preventing chafing & irritation.
  • Beeswax - helps with even application
  • Vitamin E Oil - High in antioxidants, promotes healthy skin cell development
  • Essential Oils - provide a completely natural scent, while promoting antibacterial & skin healing properties.

My unique combination of these ingredients provides you with long lasting protection, without any of the danger to your health!! Amazing, right? It’s even gentle enough to use on children, which means your preteen doesn’t ever need to meet the dangers of antiperspirants!!

 So, how do I transition?

If you’re completely new to natural deodorant, you may wonder about the transition. I’ve had people reach out with concerns about having tried, but it “didn’t work”, or they developed an irritation and turned back. I understand completely. Listen, when I initially transitioned, it was quite the experience. I’m here to tell you, IT IS POSSIBLE and well worth it!! Here’s what to expect.

You will notice during the first few days of using your natural deodorant that you are sweating a bit more than you are used to. This is completely normal. Your body is working hard to rid itself of the toxins that have built up over time, plus accommodating for what it assumes will be the antiperspirant it’s gotten used to. Do not let this deter you. Over the course of the first 7 or so days, I would advise you to keep your deodorant stick with you, so that you may refresh and reapply throughout the day as needed. Allow your body the time to detox & reset. You will notice as you stick with it, that your need to reapply will lessen as each day passes, until you’re finally able to apply as you normally would (possibly less!).

Once time passes and your body begins to realize that it’s no longer fighting clogged pores and dangerous toxins, it will naturally start to develop less and less sweat. Less sweat means less odor causing bacteria. Less odor causing bacteria means the less you need to apply your deodorant. Less deodorant means less money spent yearly and a healthier, more confident you!!
